Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when he's released from prison after thirty-five years. Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades. Maybe not, though King has created a newcomer to that long legacy of PIs where there's no trench coat needed but the fedora still fits quite nicely.Though actually the second volume in the trilogy, 2015's Finders Keepers serves as the basis for the third season: "Philip Marlowe you ain't," Hodges thinks to himself as he's being persuaded to take his first case. He really succeeds with Hodges' companions: a smart African-American neighbor kid who's both loyal to the sexagenarian and vital to his older friend's lack of technological skills, and a woman who has to work past her own mental issues to help her new pals foil Brady's nefarious plan to go out with a bang.
King deftly takes elements of hard-boiled mysteries and puts a fresh spin on them, such as the relationship between Hodges and the attractive woman who "hires" him.
King has made no secret of his love for crime fiction, and the master of horror has branched out in recent years and found success with a historical time-travel tale ( 11/22/63) and a coming-of-age story ( Joyland). He offers a fascinating look at what makes a serial killer in a post-9/11 context and is exceedingly worthy to be in King's vast menagerie of malevolence.
Brady Hartsfield is a weird dude with mommy issues hiding in plain sight as both an IT specialist and the ice-cream man, watching Hodges from afar but also working on a new plan to maim and kill thousands.
